aquehonga, the original Lenape name for Staten Island, continues my ongoing interest in field recordings and creating works from a specific place. This work was created as part of LUMEN Resonant Sound Space for the LUMEN Festival 2016, curated by Staten Island Arts and Monica Valenzuela. This studio version distills the 5 hour performance into a 20 minute track highlighting different aspects of sounds found on Staten Island: Sinhalese radio broadcasts referencing the Sri Lankan population on the island, recordings from Kill Van Kull reflecting Staten Island's maritime legacy, as well as an unrecognizable sample from native sons Wu-Tang Clan. These recordings, and others, are juxtaposed and edited together, displaying the history of the island, the contemporary landscape, and perhaps its future.
