about

This work continues with my ongoing use of field recordings and building a performance and work out of the geography of a specific place. aquehonga is the original Lenape name for Staten Island and the piece is built from recordings taken from the island and used in the 5 hour performance installation LUMEN Resonant Sound Space. This performance occurred at the LUMEN Festival 2016 and was curated by Staten Island Arts. The performance, and this distillation, highlights different aspects of various found sounds: Sinhalese radio broadcasts referencing the Sri Lankan population of Staten Island, recordings from Kill Van Kull that reflect the maritime legacy of the island, as well as an all but unrecognizable sample from native sons Wu-Tang Clan. These differing pieces are juxtaposed together, showcasing the past and contemporary aspects of the island and point toward its future.
Thanks to Terrance von Solomone who collaborated on the performance of this project. More information can be found at: www.johnphastings.org/lumen-resonant-sound-space
